WORKSHOP /// UNDER-READING
In this workshop we will explore under-reading, an exercise where actors are given their lines by their colleagues in the room. This is a great way to free the actor from the constraints of holding a script as they work so they can keep focus, eye contact and connection with their partner. Emotional release is about using physical techniques to help confuse and park the body’s natural defences. It encourages muscle memory to allow an actor to safely explore greater depths of character work and lay the foundation for a more nuanced performance. This immediate response and reaction technique between actors encourages intense movement and fight work to be explored organically alongside exploration of text, soundscape and light. In this session, we will be looking at the use of under-reading in a rehearsal room for monologues, duologues and large scenes. Some texts will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring in any monologues or scenes that they are preparing (or want to be working on). We will then start to look at natural defences that actors hold on to and try some physical exercises to push past the body and mind’s natural need to fight, fly or freeze. Wear comfy clothing and be prepared to work!

"I just wanted to say what a brilliant night I had last night at your workshop... It was a warm group and your openess made it feel easy to get on with the work and explore..."
"Thank you so much for the workshop last night. It was a very useful exercise for me, and great not just to see the scenes up on their feet, but acted out with such enthusiasm and talent; it was remarkable how quickly the actors managed to latch on to the spirit of the piece. And you two have set up a very valuable initative, which you seem to be able to organise with an efficency that in no way detracts from the fun - long may it continue! " -- David Crook, Writer
